Preventative dental services allow for the early detection of dental problems such as cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer. Identifying these issues in their early stages makes them easier and less expensive to treat. It plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health, preventing dental issues, and promoting overall well-being. Regular check-ups and cleanings, combined with proper at-home oral hygiene, form the foundation for a healthy and confident smile.

Professional Teeth Cleaning to Prevent Gum Disease

Even patients who practice impeccable oral hygiene at home can miss hard-to-reach areas between teeth and at the back of the mouth. When plaque is not thoroughly removed, it calcifies into a hard substance called tartar or calculus. Once tartar develops, all the brushing and flossing in the world can’t remove it. At your oral hygiene visit, we will use dental instruments to remove this hard substance and finish off your cleaning with a tooth polishing. Dr. Alex and Dr. Kelly perform an examination of your mouth to check for a variety of issues, including tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer. He will check your jaw joints and bite for functional problems.

Fluoride Treatments and Sealants
Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride is essential in preventing tooth decay and promoting overall dental health.
Fluoride helps in the remineralization of tooth enamel. Enamel is the outer layer of the teeth and serves as a protective shield. Fluoride makes enamel more resistant to acid attacks from bacteria and acids produced by plaque, which helps prevent the formation of cavities. In the early stages of tooth decay, when demineralization has occurred but cavities have not yet formed, fluoride can help reverse the process by promoting remineralization.

Fluoride is particularly important during the development of teeth in children. It aids in forming strong and healthy teeth, making them more resistant to decay. Applied as a varnish, fluoride treatments are recommended for all children under the age of 18 and adults who are at a higher risk of tooth decay.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a preventive dental treatment designed to protect the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars). These teeth often have pits and fissures that are difficult to clean thoroughly with regular brushing. Sealants act as a physical barrier, preventing bacteria and food particles from settling into these areas and causing decay.

Sealants are commonly recommended for children and teenagers as soon as their permanent molars and premolars erupt. However, adults who are at a high risk of cavities can also benefit from sealants.
